Yeah... That's why I'm assembling a tribute for CPAOD Chibi. One of the CPAOD godfathers has passed from this realm of being. I don't think I've been taking it terribly well. Something that's really annoying the hell out of me... I was so far out in lalaland, I didn't know I'd asked him to do a column. So when I was FINALLY adding CPAOD #10 to the web site I noticed his column in there. Or "would be" column, since there'll never be a 2nd installment. It wasn't that I forgot his column, it was that I forgot every single thing in the issue. Except that anime thing I did, to cover for the fact that I was cracking and failing to ask anyone for anything. I remembered that and cringed all the time. ;) But I couldn't remember anything else. Which is a shame, there were some good things in there. Too bad I didn't remember those and forget the rest. So, seeing that Damon column in there while adding the contents, I realized I had asked for something... and I had asked for something good and recurrent... and damn I wish it wasn't too late to do something more with that. I am such a Grand Champion of Too Late. *beating head against wall* So CPAOD Chibi #1 is dedicated to Damon. I just hope he isn't doing this with Mormons. Or maybe he should do this with Mormons. Hrm. The Blasted One shall ponder this quandary. Might be fun to have stories in CPAOD Chibi where CPAOD people crop up (kind of like the one John Everson wrote after Bar Bar). People could guess who is who in the stories. This one would be a freebie since the real names are used (well, names that have been used and known for many years -- The Thug and Miranda Absentia. He designed stained glass in St. Francis' Chapel and executed the bronze sculpture of the Saint set in the brick corridor outside Dagwell Hall. Britton was born in Nebraska, attended the University of Iowa, and studied with Grant Wood in the 1920s. Between 1935 and 1940, he completed seven mural projects for the WPA Section of Fine Arts. In 1942, he relocated to Colorado Springs where he taught at the Fine Art Center and Fountain Valley School. In 1950 he began a shift from painting to sculpture. In 1967 he moved to Denver and began work on the large public sculptures for which he is best-known, including the map of the US and entrance doors in bronze at U.S. National Bank, bronze fountain at Botanic Gardens, column in the lobby of the Denver Federal Building on Stout Street, his monumental buffalo at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Orpheus and Euridyce at the Denver Art Museum, and the Yin & Yang sculpture in north Cherry Creek. His Air Force Academy sculpture dates from this period. In addition to architectural and figure sculpture, Britton executed many stained glass commissions for churches and synogogues in Denver, and he sculpted, painted, and made prints with religious themes, including St. Francis, three kings, the holy family, Herod and Salome, the Madonna, and Christ Crucified. His art was sometimes controversial and challenging, but always spiritual. This show includes original stained glass designs, watercolors of birds and other subjects, and vintage prints. Britton's works will be on display in the walkway behind the welcome center, and will be available for purchase from Thanksgiving week through the Christmas season. He loved the image of St. Francis, and long-time parishioners may remember his wood block print of the Saint being used as a gift and greeting in the 1970s. Many of the pieces are personally signed (usually initialed) by the artist, and some are signed by the estate and carry the estate stamp. Lee and Jennifer will donate 25% of the total sales proceeds to the Art & Architecture Commission to help in the creation and preservation of the Cathedral?s distinguished art pieces, past, present, and future. Instructions for purchasing artwork will be available at the reception desk in the Welcome Center. *To the Parish of Saint John's* Friends, At the annual meeting in January, the congregation will elect four persons to three-year terms on the Vestry. Now, a CD that combines the many musical places in the Wilderness will be released by Kate Eaton. A labor of love for the past eight months, "Arise" will be introduced on Dec. 6 at Saint John's. Kate has recorded a CD including some of the traditional hymns she has arranged for the Wilderness. While many things have contributed to the success of this service, one of the main aspects that is a draw is the music. Kate has been leading the arts and music for the Wilderness since its inception in September of 2007. During this time she has brought an array of talented musicians from Denver and Boulder's music communities. She has long held a dream of bringing together different musical influences from all over the world to create a unique blend of traditional music with ethnic instruments. The Wilderness enters each new season with a guest musician that Kate has identified and invited to join her small ensemble. Artists that have been included have played instruments such as the oud and nay from the Middle East, Irish flutes, Bulgarian bag pipes, to name just a few. "Arise" includes five traditional hymns and one sanctus that she has arranged. There are also six original compostions that Kate has written. These songs will be performed live following the Wilderness service on Dec. 6 at 7p.m. She will have several musicans who've made contributions to the CD and the Wilderness with her this evening. The event is open to all and her new CD will be available that evening for purchase. *Click here to see the "Arise" CD * *Save the Date* Our Founders Day celebration is just two months away. We hope you have marked your calendars for the evening of Jan. 23 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of our congregation. The founders chose to name the parish Saint John's Church in the Wilderness because it would be located 700 miles from the nearest Episcopal Church. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Special Educational Offerings: Bach Cantatas* 2010 marks the 325th birthday of J.S. I personally want to extend an invitation to you to become a part of this exciting new ministry. I welcome your thoughts on this and would be extremely grateful for your help and advice on getting this started. We also hope to expand our *?Pastoral Care Commission? *and focus on the caring ministries of the Cathedral that support our faith community. Scott, MD Junior Warden * * * * * * * * * * * *** *Zen Center hosts dialogue on sustainability, faith* The Zen Center of Denver will host the final session of the Interfaith Alliance of Colorado's 2009 Interfaith Dialogue Series. The dialogue event will be on *Wed., Nov. 18 from 6:26 to 9:00 p.m.* The Zen Center of Denver is located at *3101 W. 31st Ave*. The Zen Center is a Zen Buddhist community (sangha) offering Zen Buddhist practice and training. The primary practice of the Zen Center of Denver is zazen - seated meditation. Zazen is the heart of Zen practice and is simultaneously the full expression of inherent enlightenment (satori), as well as the means of uncovering it. The purpose of the event is three-fold: to promote understanding of Colorado's diverse faith traditions; to create a time of learning and sharing about a facet of our host tradition; and to learn about and practice small-group dialogue using our theme ? Sustainability and Faith. It is TIA-CO's hope that by gaining a better understanding of each other, we can move toward a world where diversity of culture and faith traditions is celebrated. All are welcome at the event and there is no cost to attend. For more information, contact Diane Otsuka at di_ots@hotmail.com or Jeremy Shaver, Executive Director, at 303-733-4089 or outreach@interfaithallianceco.org . This year?s thanksgiving offering will be directed to The Caring Association for Native Americans. CANA helps Native Americans who come to Denver from all over the Southwest for health care. It is usually quite urgent by the time they get here. The agency assists patients in contacting medical providers and looks after families who end up following loved ones who need critical care. CANA helps them find temporary housing, food, and provides prayer and counseling. The work of CANA is crucial to the well being of one of the most over looked group of people in our country. When we remember and give thanks with our families and loved ones this year, consider careful what we have and what we would like to share, please be generous with those who have even less than we do. Please make your checks out to Saint John?s with Thanksgiving Offering in the memo line.
