It's something I agree with wholeheartedly. Good find, Steve. January 27, 2008 Written by Ruben Navarrette Worried that Americans are on the brink of a recession ??" or perhaps already in the middle of one ??" the Bush administration and the House of Representatives have reached tentative agreement on an economic stimulus package. Glad to hear it. A stimulus may not work exactly as expected, but it's worth a try. Americans are overtaxed as it is, and anything that gets more of their tax dollars back into their hands is a good thing. And if they spend what they get, it'll be good for the economy. There's just one thing. You hear about how voters are angry and holding Congress' feet to the fire until they get some sort of relief. But let's not get so caught up in asking what government can do for us that we forget what we can do for ourselves. The No. 1 economic threat facing the United States today isn't globalization, stagnant wages, unfair trade policy or illegal immigration. And it certainly isn't what one cable TV demagogue glibly calls a ??owar on the middle class??? by big media, big corporations and big special interests. Rather, it's the sense of entitlement that many Americans take with them into the workplace and the eagerness with which they shift the blame when things don't go according to plan. The key is to never take responsibility for the personal decisions you've made. Eventually, some opportunistic politician will come along and confirm what you've always suspected ??" that you are at the mercy of forces beyond your control. It wasn't always this way. Fifty years ago, Americans were a heartier bunch. They'd grown up in the Depression and defeated Nazi Germany and the other Axis powers during World War II, and they found honor in doing any kind of work. If they didn't earn enough money doing it, they took on another job, or another one after that. Most of all, they took pride in the idea that ??" in this country ??" our destiny is in our own hands. Today, according to a survey of workers in their 20s and 30s, young Americans expect their jobs to provide not only a nice salary but also plenty of vacation time to enjoy it. And from research done by Jean Twenge, a professor of psychology at San Diego State University, we know that many members of ??oGeneration Me??? walk into job interviews brimming with self-esteem and expecting to be put on a path to a corporate vice presidency. Is that all? And what if they don't get everything that they think they're entitled to? That's when the blame comes in. Americans like to blame illegal immigrants for keeping wages low, or workers from India or China for taking high-skilled jobs. In either case, instead of accepting the challenge and trying to beat the competition, too many American workers will call out for protection. And again, some shameless politician will offer it. Speaking of shameless politicians, what was Mitt Romney thinking when he told Michigan voters that all those lost jobs in the U.S. auto industry might just come back? Sure, and Ford might start making Edsels again. It took John McCain to dish out some straight talk and tell Michigan voters what they need to hear ??" that these jobs are gone because the world is changing and they have to change with it. That was awfully brave. But McCain could have gone further. He could have explained that organized labor helped bring about this displacement by pricing autoworkers out of the market. He could have pointed out that many workers went along for the ride because they felt entitled to the same standard of living that their parents enjoyed but didn't want to get the extra schooling or training to achieve it. He could have said the situation is complicated by the fact that there will always be those who won't move away from their hometowns ??" even when the towns are on life support. And, finally, he could have reminded voters that they can't always blame their problems on others and that, sooner or later, they have to grow up and take control of their lives and their destinies. As part of a stimulus package, the government wants to send out tax rebates to jump-start the economy. That's all well and good. But what some Americans really need isn't a check they take to the bank. It's a lecture they take to heart. -- My Info: http://www.netonecom.net/about.php ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ _______________________________________________ To subscribe or unsubscribe: http://lists.netonecom.net/mailman/listinfo/dativus -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I read Mr. Navarette's editorials in the Indy Star from time to time and find them quite conservative. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as the positions being taken are consistent. In his commentary Ruben makes many good points about taking personal responsibility for choices each of us makes in our lives instead of blaming our lot on the government, big corporations, cheap foreign labor, etc. Who could be against these sentiments? However, how about our collective responsibility to each other? Are we responsible to make right the decisions we all corporately take in error? In his very first paragraph, it seems to me that Mr. Navarette has a great big huge hole in his logic. He posits that a stimulus package could be a good thing for taxpayers if it "gets more of their tax dollars back into their hands" and if they spend what they get. Anybody who knows anything about our federal budget knows that our tax dollars have already been spent to the tune of 115-120 percent this year alone. The money in this stimulus package isn't going to be our tax dollars given back to us; it is going to be the interest payments our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be paying to Chinese bankers and anyone else in the world holding American debt instruments. In this case we clearly are not being responsible to our collective descendants who must pay the price for our profligate spending on ourselves - after spending over a trillion dollars on an ill-advised war and tax cuts for those who least need them. I still might be convinced that a stimulus package makes sense right now to get the consumer engine to our economy going. After all, a long line of Presidents going back to FDR have used government money issued against future debt to jumpstart a moribund economy. If I thought all this cash in hand would be spent on American food, American plywood, American concrete, I might be convinced of its useful multiplier effect on the economy. However, how much of this government largess will be spent on Japanese cars, Korean flat screen displays, and Chinese toys? How much of this money will end up leaving the U.S. economy, thus requiring an even greater debt load in the future? I've seen several personages of late talk about spending such money on American infrastructure needs such as roads and bridges (even Mike Huckabee); I can't think of a better way to incur new debt in order to get people jobs, jumpstart the economy, and provide productivity gains to our economy that will stretch out for 40-50 years. The money might not percolate into the economy quite as quick as a direct cash transfer, but - then again - nobody ever claimed that the high one gets from the satisfaction of hard work is felt as quick as that created by a drug-induced high. Its time we all collectively took responsibility - and accepted the pain - to put our fiscal house in order. Each of us should vote for the candidate this fall - Republican or Democrat - who we believe will most likely tackle this challenge and brave the political fall-out from doing so. I' just got an email from Roger letting me in on the great friendship/slapstick comedy and crazy relationships that the dozen or more of you guys have been privileged tO share for so many months now in this almost real-time..."back at ya" retorts. I've been trying to call and talk with him about my idea re" how could we best assist the kids at UU? But as you already know, trying to reach him r get him to stop, slow down and talk for more than 10 minutes is a true miracle. Now you who have resided in the frozen snowbanks, trees with no green leaves (except conifers) and of course the deciduous models that tough it out with "leaves", "leaf-s" "leevz" /-?-?--for about 6-7 months; with your frozen rivers and the icy wastelands of the great lakes/midwest and can only wear shorts 45 days out of the year have reaped your reward. You should come out and enjoy the Great SW desert where we have stop-light and speeding cameras dba police offers, DUI offenders with 45 offenses (felonies)...still driving..... hard water with caliche' and grit' in your jello and we are as high in altitude as Denver 5,500 feet. Go figure. NOOW, back to the much required apology Randy and Y'all !I can only offer my MEA CULPA ??!!! Would you believe I was in a coma for the last 5 years? No, didn't think so. I sincerely apologize for taking your college-era information-age pranks . server-crashes, etc.,and remarks meant for you KWAYZEE KIDZ. out of context. I just thought Arlan's and others responses were emails were in-response to my email requesting ideas about how we could best assist the kids @ Union University in Jackson. I guess this was my introduction into the NEW and IMPROVED www.Cheap Thrills.? NOW, that's an idea that hundreds oof us could do our very worst in submitting very off-the-wall video content and yet getting the very best of reviews !!!! I truly did not write that email response in any other frame of heart, mind and soul ..with my concerns for the kids @ Union University. I would be most honored if you and the rest of the gang would send your condolences for my brain's-death and I looking forward now to the new active net-one Dativus list-serve and encouraging the guys now in school adding their remarks. I've read some very interesting off that site ...so many beyond comments re: why I rushed DKA, Even that was great, serious commentsand VERY interesting because it gave me and others who signed up and logged in a really solid view of each one's goals, ideals and character. If you have a reply all list or mini db that includes all these guys, would you pullleeeez forward this truly honest but how terrribly embarrassing reply ! We need everybody to get their dues in...we have yet to incorporate as a not-for-profit as well as get two checks off to the two missions projects! Arlan President Swords Marketing Group, Inc. Any nut case out there can get your personal info off your drivers license (or drivers permit) all they need to know is your name and the state you live in! ************************************************************************** Check your driver's license... I definitely removed mine, I suggest you all do the same . Now you can see anyone's Driver's License on the Internet, including your own! I just searched for mine and there it was! Thanks Homeland Security! Maybe we should start up a petition or something protesting this Just enter your name, City and state in the gray box to see if yours is on file. After your license comes on the screen, click the box marked 'Please Remove'. This will remove it from public viewing, but not from law enforcement. http://www.license.shorturl.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delicious ideas to please the pickiest eaters.
